Calligraphy can’t be a hobby in Romania because when I grow up we had this in school as a subject for the first 4 years. And all the children learn how to handwrite beautiful. But I understand why in a modern world in which most of the writing it is done on a phone or on a computer, this trade became a hobby.
One can start a journal and when one tries to read what it wrote a few days ago to not understand if its handwriting is messy. So, from writing a journal you can get into calligraphy. Also it may be necessary for some jobs like teachers and professors. But in any job in which handwriting is mandatory.
I don’t know if in your country you have calligraphy as a subject when you are a small child but in Europe this is the way in which children learn to write first.
Writing is a way of expressing yourself and you want to be as beautiful as it can be so other people understand it. This is the purpose of calligraphy, to help you write clearly so all the people that read what you wrote understand it.
I saw that there are sets especially made for calligraphy, but you only need a pen and ink for the start. There are also special notebooks with more stripes so you can practice every letter of the alphabet in detail.
I personally did not like calligraphy as a subject in school and for 4 years but I do have a clear handwrite although I did not practice since middle school at it.
